What’s the Best Size Motorbike Trailer — and How Do You Transport Your Bikes Safely on Long Trips?

If you tow motorbikes on long trips regularly, or even just occasionally, you’ll know that it can be a challenge on a standard box trailer, car trailer or flat top trailer. As hard as you try, it can be difficult to get the stability and safety you need so that your bikes aren’t impacted by the journey.
This is what inspired Basic Trailers to develop our range of strong, durable and versatile motorbike trailers.
Our motorbike trailers come in a range of sizes, so whether you’re towing a single bike, two or three — plus all your gear — we have the right trailer to make transporting your motorbikes safer and more secure.
Choosing the Right Size of Motorbike Trailer
At our Adelaide workshop, we design and manufacture single-axle motorbike trailers in four sizes: 7×4, 7×5, 8×4 and 8×5.
7×4 Motorbike Trailer
Our compact single-axle 7 x 4 motorbike trailers are fitted with two adjustable wheel chocks, multiple tie-down locations front and rear for added security on the road, plus an easily-accessed and positioned ramp.
7×5 Motorbike Trailer
Featuring three adjustable wheels chocks, our 7 x 5 motorbike trailer gives you extra room to fit that third bike, and the chocks accommodate a range of wheel sizes, up to 21 inches in diameter and 7.5 inches wide. It comes with a ramp as standard and there are multiple-tie down points front and back.
8×4 Motorbike Trailer
The 8 x 4 motorbike trailer is fitted with two adjustable wheel chocks which can accommodate wheels 15 to 21 inches in diameter and up to 7.5 inches wide. It also comes with a ramp that is stored underneath the trailer as standard, and the multiple tie-down points mean your bikes are always stable and secure when you’re on the road.
8×5 Motorbike Trailer
The largest trailer in the range, the Basic Trailers single axle 8 x 5 motorbike trailer has three adjustable wheel chocks, front and rear tie-down points, and comes with a removable ramp as standard. The innovative design of the wheel chocks mean they can accommodate wheels 15 to 21 inches in diameter and up to 7.5 inches wide, and like all of our trailers the 8 x 5 is made from 100% Australian steel in our Adelaide workshop.
In addition, all of our motorbike trailers feature a full checker-plate floor, mechanical disc brakes and calipers, a 50mm override tow coupling (2000kg rated), LED multi-volt tail lights, mudflaps and a jockey wheel as standard.
Enhanced Safety on the Road with a Motorbike Trailer
It is possible to tow motorbikes with a box trailer, plant trailer or car trailer, but there are risks in doing this — both to you and your bike.
Our motorbike trailers are specially designed to make them easy to load and unload, even solo, as all the trailers in the range have a detachable ramp as standard which is very simple to use and store.
The adjustable wheel chocks keep your bike upright and secure in any towing conditions, helped by the tie down points integrated into the chocks at the front, and the flush tie-down points at the rear of the trailer.
All of these features mean you can load and unload quickly and simply without risk of damaging your bike, and then be confident that it will stay in place when towing, regardless of the terrain.
Tips for Towing a Motorcycle Safely
Our motorbike trailers are designed to make towing one, two or three motorcycles safe, easy and stress-free, even if you’re on your own.
For maximum towing safety, we recommend following the steps below.
1. Position the ramp in line with the wheel chock to be used, and wheel the bike into place.
2. Position each bike upright in a wheel chock, adjusting the chock as required to fit the wheel size.
3. Four ratchet straps should ideally be used to secure the bike; one on each handlebar, and one on each footpeg.
4. Straps should be secured to the front tie points integrated into the chocks, and the rear flush tie-down points. The tension on each should be even, and tight enough to prevent excessive movement while in transit.
5. Fork sleeves are also recommended to be used in order to prevent scratches or other damage.
6. If you make stops during the journey, take the opportunity to check the straps, as they can lose tension over an extended period of time on the road.
